Submitted by CAROL NELSON FINE ART BLOG
What an age we live in! The internet and email puts me in contact with people all over the globe looking at my work. Their encouraging comments mean so much to me. I feel so gratified and thankful when they plunk down their hard-earned money to own one of [...]
“Sunset Over Jackson Lake and the Grand Tetons” ~ 24″x36″ A Painting a Day Hudson River School Western Landscapes
Submitted by A Painting for You!
This work pictures a beautiful sunset over Jackson Lake and the Grand Tetons located in Wyoming. As I have confessed before, an artist I am… a photographer I’m not. The easel light over the painting during the photographing has washed out the colors in the sky area and the photos [...]
Good Connections
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
There are those who are called to greatness and those who are called to stand next to greatness. Although a fine painter in his own right, Emile Bernard is best known for befriending bigger stars such as Van Gogh and Gauguin in their heyday and Cézanne in his twilight years. [...]
The Grand Central Academy
Submitted by Gurney Journey
Most people think of drawing as a form of personal expression, a mark of individual style. But before the twentieth century, drawing was regarded more as a basic way to understand the world, a path of knowledge that was unavailable to the casual observer. If you could draw, the world’s secrets would [...]

I’ve been waiting to tell you the good news: This September Andrews McMeel Publishing will be releasing a book that I have written based on this blog.
I was waiting to tell you until the cover was finalized. It just came in! Here’s what the book looks like. The book is called Imaginative [...]

Fuchsia, 9045, original floral painting
Submitted by CAROL NELSON FINE ART BLOG
Need a spot of color on your wall? This fuchsia closeup may do the trick. As things are starting to really green up in my yard, the garden centers are gearing up for the spring onslaught. I’m remembering this pot of fuchsias I had hanging on the patio last [...]
OUT OF THE VAULT: Bad Boiz
Submitted by BRENDA YORK’S PAINTING A DAY
24×36″ oil on canvas, purchase info on my website
Ahhh….I’ve been basking in the afterglow of ArtWalk for the past two days. It was a great weekend; some of my favorite collectors-now-friends came by, I met so many people that GET my art (not everybody does and that’s OK–really) and [...]
Drawing Inspiration
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
Like any good Romantic artist, Eugene Delacroix drew his inspiration from many sources of his time, including classic Romantic (or Romantically interpreted) literature. Born April 26, 1789, Delacroix did seventeen illustrations for Albert Stapfer’s 1828 French translation of Goethe’s Faust. Delacroix’s Mephistopheles in Flight (above, from 1828) shows the devil [...]
“Sunset at Oceanside” ~ 4/29/09 A Painting a Day Hudson River School landscapes by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
“Sunset at Oceanside” was a delight to do. I guess you can tell that I am fascinated with skies and clouds and the sunlight and the effects…the mood and atmosphere it produces. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed painting it! ~Connie

“Captured by the Light” ~ 28″ x 22″ A Painting a Day Hudson River School Luminous Landscapes Paintings by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
I “luv” the luminosity of Light! When you think of “light”, it’s something light and airy, not heavy and burdensome. I think of purity, holiness, and rightousness, cleanliness, godliness, not dark, dreary, dirty and tainted. Jesus Christ said, “I am the Light of the world”. “He who cometh to Me, [...]

Growing Princess
Submitted by Gurney Journey
The Belgian filly named Princess is getting bigger and stronger day by day. I bring my sketchbook on the morning walk and try to do a sketch each day.
She’s in constant motion, so I find I have to try to observe her so that I internalize her form, choose a pose, [...]
“Without…”
Submitted by foothills & highlands
The “Historic Buford (GA) Plein Air Festival” was this past weekend, hosting 43 artists. I did this quick color study on Saturday morning. I decided to leave it ‘as is’…without doors, without windows, without cars, without people. The shapes were interesting enough.

Stealing Magic
Submitted by Ancient Artist: Developing an art career after 50
In mythology, a common theme involves the hero facing danger and travail while he ventures into the unknown to steal the magic of the gods. While our hero battles bravely, often times it appears he is overwhelmed until that moment when he snatches destiny from the [...]
“Breakthrough!” ~ 4/27/09 A Painting a Day Hudson River School landscapes by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
This is another intense study of one of Hudson River School master Albert Bierstadt that I did. He and Frederick E. Church were two of my favorites. They were masters at trying to capture the sublime. Enjoy!
“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. [...]
Third Time’s a Charm
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
Today is Alex’s third birthday. Annie and I can’t believe how big our little boy (above and below) has grown. He learns more each day and teaches us more about ourselves every day, too. Annie and I want to share every experience possible with Alex, including art. He’s been to [...]
Crossroads, 9043, mixed media abstract
Submitted by CAROL NELSON FINE ART BLOG
This painting has stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and copper leaf embedded onto the canvas with acrylic modeling compound. In spite of the abundance of “cold metal” - the aluminum and stainless - it has a warm feeling because of the copper and the bronze and green acrylic metallic paints.

Theory of Sacrifices
Submitted by Gurney Journey
One idea at the core of nineteenth century painting is known as the Theory of Sacrifices. A poetic quality, it was believed, comes from the sacrifice of needless detail.
As one writer put it: “Nature instills sentiments in the spectator through the selective sacrifice of details in order to improve the overall effect.”
Jules [...]
The Real Lee Crabb
Submitted by Gurney Journey
The guy who modeled for Lee Crabb, the sneaky malcontent in Dinotopia, is an old friend named David Starrett. He is pretty craggy, but he’s a lot more handsome than the character I turned him into. He is the son of the famous western character actor Charles Starrett.
Dave Starrett has taught art [...]
Concert Sketching
Submitted by Gurney Journey
I’m always a little nervous to haul out my sketching gear during a highbrow concert, like this a capella madrigal event at Vassar College. You don’t want to be scratching away on a big charcoal pad, or knocking over jugs of water in some lady’s lap.
So I recommend this technique, which is [...]
“Woodland Stream Waterfall” ~ 4/24/09 A Painting a Day Hudson River School Landscapes by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
There is something so peaceful to watch… and listen to the gurgling waters of a lively stream flowing through the woodland area, especially when there is a small waterfalls on it’s course. It’s extra special when the beautifully colored autumn foliage grace the trees. I hope you enjoy this painting [...]
Robin Red Breast
Submitted by BRENDA YORK’S PAINTING A DAY
10×8″ oil on canvas
Back in the Midwest, where I grew up, the first sign of summer was catching a glimpse of the resplendent robin red breast. Guess you could say the same is true here, in San Diego, only you’d have to look for Robin at Black’s Beach. If [...]
