Submitted by Gurney Journey
When I first designed Waterfall City (detail, above) I hadn’t dreamed up the idea of Dinotopia yet, with its partnership of humans and saurians. The logical way to travel across the chasm was by a giant pterosaur, but at the time I was thinking of hang gliders.
These design sketches imagine configurations for [...]
South Platte, 05608, river runs through a canyon
Submitted by CAROL NELSON FINE ART BLOG
Today’s painting is of the South Platte River as it runs through Eleven Mile Canyon. This canyon is beautiful any time of year, but especially in the fall. This is a favorite fishing area in central Colorado. It has huge rock formations that are fun to scramble on.

“Heavenly Sunshine” ~ 11/29/08 A Painting a Day Hudson River School Luminous Sunset Landscapes by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
In painting this work, I was reminded the greatness of God…He is Omnipresent…present everywhere, Omniscient…all knowing, and Omnipotent…all powerful! He is above all… and over all in all these things… or He wouldn’t be God. I was reminded also of His wonderful thoughts and of his infinite goodness and mercies [...]

A Time to Give Thanks
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
A Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! (Norman Rockwell’s Freedom From Want [above, from 1943], part of the Four Freedoms series, provides the appropriate visual.)
I personally want to give thanks first and foremost for the person who keeps me sane on a daily basis within the cocoon of her love—the beautiful, the [...]
Waterfall City Concept 1
Submitted by Gurney Journey
Over the next few days, while I’m assembling some of my trip sketches, I thought I’d show you some of the early concept sketches for Waterfall City (1988). Here’s one from 1987 showing the water emerging from two big arches, like something at the edge of the world. The lighting is from [...]
Manhandled by Apes
Submitted by Gurney Journey
Two days ago I climbed to the top of the rock of Gibraltar to observe the wild Barbary apes in their natural habitat. They’re really tail-less macaques, the only wild monkeys in all of Europe, and they’re known for stealing food from tourists.
I followed a narrow trail near the summit and found [...]
Return Flight
Submitted by Gurney Journey
I’m back from Malta, Tunisia, Morocco, and Gibraltar. Here’s the reaction of my Yorkshire airline seatmates to my three-week old unwashed clothes, scraggly beard, and monkey urine aroma.
I’ll explain the monkey urine tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving holiday to all, Americans or not, and thanks to Jeanette for keeping the blog going during my [...]

Visionary Company
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
As I delved further and further into English poetry as a high school and college student, certain poets just grabbed me immediately with the power of their vision—W.B. Yeats, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and, perhaps above all others, William Blake. Born November 28, 1757, Blake could easily have served as the [...]

Fountain Pen and Marker
Submitted by Gurney Journey
Fountain pen and marker is a good combination for doing concept art sketches. The pen is an inexpensive Waterman pen from an office supply store. You can fill it with any color ink that you want, as long as the ink is watersoluble. Markers can then give the sketch a touch of [...]

10×8″ oil on canvas, PURCHASE INFORMATION
Another re-post but, oh well….Most of what I’ve learned about going green has been from my kids. They’ve always been passionate about conservation issues and they definitely “Walk the Walk”. Hence, the inspiration for this painting. The little green people that I live with. [...]

Submitted by Ancient Artist: Developing an art career after 50
It’s Thanksgiving Week, so I want to offer a big Thank You to everyone who reads this blog - and an even bigger Thank You to those who leave comments. There’d be little point in blogging if there weren’t readers out there smiling at the Ancient [...]
Burning Man
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
Of the big three of the Golden Age of Mexican Mural Painting—Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, and Jose Clemente Orozco—Orozco burns with an intensity and singularity of purpose beyond even his intense contemporaries. Born November 23, 1883, Orozco passionately believed in the freedom of the Mexican people but never compromised those [...]
“The Pathway of Life” ~ 11/24/08 A Painting a Day Hudson River School Landscapes by Connie Tom
Submitted by A Painting for You!
This scene reminded me somewhat of our journey through this life. You can’t see around the next bend. There are fences up sometimes. We’re enclosed by circumstances bigger than ourselves. There are bumps, rocks, and sometimes the way seems tilted. This reminds me that God is ultimately in control and [...]

Sitting on the Dock of the Bay
Submitted by Art Blog By Bob
When J.M.W. Turner donated his 1815 painting Dido Building Carthage to the National Gallery in London, he did so under one condition—that it be hung between Claude Lorrain’s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba (above, from 1648) and Landscape with the Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca forever. I just came across this photo of some of my plein air paintings featured at Reflections Gallery in Chattanooga, TN. The photo isn’t high resolution so clicking on the image will show the paintings ‘grainy’. All are 8″x10″ oil, painted en plein air, alla prima, in and near Tunnel Hill, GA. [...]

Dean Cornwell, Illustrator
Submitted by Gurney Journey
“An important difference between a fine artist and an illustrator is that the former goes through life painting the things that he sees before him, while the latter is forced to paint something that neither he nor anyone else has ever seen, and make it appear real. The true measure of an [...]
